The 5 People To Surround Yourself With
Everybody knows multiple adages to claim that what you surround yourself with slowly become a part of who you are. Some of the infamous clichés like “garbage in, garbage out” are heavily truth-based. We absolutely do adapt to the environment we spend the most time in, and those we share it with. One of the latest thoughts on the topic in recent years is that, you are the sum of the five people you surround yourself with. Jim Rohn is credited with the saying and there is strong basis in it.
Our time is spent across a number of very different environments, from the workplace, to our home life, to groups of friends, and gathering places. Gyms, churches, and family get-togethers all provide contribution into our “inner circle” of those who are influential in our lives. I’m not certain the determination that five friends is the right number of influencers, but let’s stick with that – it sounds right anyways. There are five “types” of individuals that you should look for within your closest friends. These 5 people will draw positivity and energy out of you and be a source of encouragement, rather than a drag.
- Positive – Mr. (or Mrs.) Positive is exactly as it sounds. Always upbeat and optimistic, these people can be infectious (in a good way). They see the best in every situation, every problem, and everyone. They seek a positive resolution and they treat their friends that same way. Mr. Positive will help you minimize distracting negativity and hone in on upbeat attitudes.
- The Challenger – This individual is usually a disruptor. They prefer to push the envelope even if it means causing a disturbance, but are generally always looking for ways to improve things. The Challenger probes and questions “why”. Why you, the company, or the team, does things the way they do. They ask always with the intention of seeking more efficiency and better results. Similarly, as a friend and companion they strive to improve themselves and thereby you, as a result.
- Big Thinker – The Big Thinker tends to be a dreamer. They visualize things that most others cannot, or don’t. Thinking outside the box, keeps them on their toes and looking into the future. They provide a fresh burst of creativity when it is so often needed. In relationships with others, the Big Thinker, will often ask the “what if” questions, getting us to visualize aspects or scenarios we may not reach on our own. They encourage us to break down the boundaries that keep us complacent.
- The Doer – The Doer is always on the move, and fills their time with effective and meaningful things. They seek accomplishment in all they do, and believe that the journey is not just a means to an end. The Doer is dependable and hard working, and despises laziness. They are invaluable as a close friend, employee, employer, or coworker.
- Selfless by Nature – The Selfless by Nature individual is the breath of fresh air in a culture that only cares about self. They regularly go out of their way to impact others. Often putting their personal plans or dreams on hold so they can help others, the selfless friend will serve others first and rarely turn down an opportunity to make a difference. They are a healthy conscience to keep close, and will always be the friend to turn to for advice and insight.
Maybe you can quickly think of your friends and associates that fit these molds very quickly, and maybe not. Use this checkup as a reminder, that in order for us to find the fulfillment in our work and personal lives that we desperately seek; it is critical to look at our surrounding. Assessing our time and whom we spend it with will always provide a good gut check into our life’s direction.
